For a Love that’s deeper than the ocean. Discover the pastel Blue Hues of Aquamarine.

Often overlooked in favour of traditional diamonds, aquamarines are one of the most underrated gemstones on the market. With a rich history and stunning brilliance, incorporating aquamarine in you next piece will leave you with a style that’s truly unique.

Origins
A naturally occurring gemstone, aquamarines are one of the most striking jewels in the earth’s treasure chest. ‘I prefer to source my aquamarines from Brazil as they are the most valuable in the world.” Sais jeweller Michael Korakas …adding that variations of the gemstone can also be  found in Africa  Middle East and Russia Michael’s preference remains  Brazil for quality and rarity.

Ranging in hue from an almost colourless pale blue to a blue-green or teal, the gemstone’s name was originally derived from the Latin term for ‘seawater.’

Aquamarines are steeped in mythology. Widely believed to endow the wearer with foresight, courage, and happiness, Roman legend also dictates the stone absorbs the atmosphere of young love. ‘When blessed and worn, it joins in love, with almost magical powers.’ In Medieval times, aquamarine was also sought after to reawaken the love of married couples. Saturated in meaning, this stunning gem has significance to any relationship.

Celebs that are rocking it!
Aquamarine has a treasured place amongst the crown jewels, as seen on Princess Mary of Denmark and other members of European Royalty . And of course, who could forget Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, gifted the late Princess Diana’s aquamarine stunner for her wedding reception. But beyond the royals, A-listers have also gravitated toward the gemstone for a standout look.  Jessica Biel’s emerald cut aquamarine drop earrings and matching bracelet made a bold statement at the Oscars in 2014.

It won’t break the bank
Price is dependent on clarity, depth of colour, and to a lesser extent, the purity of colour. As a general rule, Michael Korakas explains that colour can be used as an initial indicator. ‘Usually, the darker the colour, the more it starts to add up,’ he explains.
With mid-range aquamarines costing between $150 and $200 per carat (on average), a bold ring or statement pendant is definitely within an affordable price range. Readily available and moderately priced, the modern March birthstone is a favourite when it comes to bespoke pieces.

Buyers beware
Not to be confused with the (strikingly similar) blue topaz, aquamarine will always be a little pricier purely because it’s less accessible. While the colour of blue topaz is usually a product of treating a white topaz through irradiation and intense heat, the colour of aquamarine is a totally natural occurrence, hence its rarity and higher price point.

Solid choice
Known for their durability, aquamarines require no special care and can definitely withstand the rigors of everyday wear. The colour is stable against light exposure and as long as it’s treated with care to prevent scratching and hard knocks, the gemstone itself can last a lifetime. Bear in mind, the cleaning process (if it includes mechanical techniques) can increase the risk of shattering. This section is contradictory and not clear…..we will reword it together.

Size
You’ll find aquamarines in a remarkable range of sizes, highly appropriate for those looking for options in a tailored piece. ‘Personally, I like large bold stones combined with fine metal because it really brings the stone out,’ says Michael Korakas. And being one of the most affordable gemstones on the market, many can enjoy the luxury of purchasing in larger carat sizes, perfect for a statement ring.
